{"id":749,"date":"2021-03-25T13:46:57","date_gmt":"2021-03-25T11:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/?p=749"},"modified":"2021-08-29T15:01:53","modified_gmt":"2021-08-29T13:01:53","slug":"food-waste-problem-and-possible-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/en\/food-waste-problem-and-possible-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Waste Problem And Possible Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">With the increase in population, humanity once faced the daunting task of increasing food production.\u00a0<\/span>Which, thanks to science and GMOs, has been successfully done.\u00a0In 2021, we are faced with the exact opposite problem, namely the problem of recycling food waste.\u00a0Organic waste accounts for about 70 percent of all human waste.\u00a0In this article, we will look at what is the danger and problem of food waste in the world, as well as their solutions.\u00a0Let&#8217;s start in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span>Food waste in 2021<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>A third of all food produced is lost or wasted every year worldwide.\u00a0In low-income countries, most of the loss occurs during production, while in developed countries a lot of food &#8212; about 100 kg per person per year &#8212; is wasted during the consumption stage.\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/ru\/item\/74321\/icode\/\"><span>Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0)\u00a0estimates\u00a0that the average European generates 95-115 kg of food waste at the consumption stage, while sub-Saharan Africa generates 6-11 kg per year.\u00a0Most of the food waste ends up in landfills in a still usable state.\u00a0Why it happens?\u00a0It is difficult to answer this question unequivocally.\u00a0Here are just a few of the reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>During cooking in catering establishments, as well as in our homes, we throw away the food ourselves, despite the fact that it is possible to make something else out of them.\u00a0For example, an orange peel that could be used to make a zest.\u00a0Banana peel, which, after drying, can be used as an organically rich compost for domestic plants.\u00a0Or at least old bread that could serve as bread crumbs when cooking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Breakfasts in hotels, catering.\u00a0This is a separate topic.\u00a0According to sanitary standards, every day such establishments throw away a huge amount of ready-made, fresh and tasty food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In addition, there is a problem of buyers&#8217; refusal to purchase &#171;ugly&#187; vegetables and fruits.\u00a0For some reason, even<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-743 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ugly-Fruits-And-Vegetables-300x209.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ugly-Fruits-And-Vegetables-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ugly-Fruits-And-Vegetables.jpg 509w\" alt=\"Ugly Fruits And Vegetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><span>huge catering nets refuse to buy such products.\u00a0Despite the fact that their only drawback is only appearance.\u00a0Some kind of vegetable racism.\u00a0The numbers are terrifying.\u00a0Vegetables and fruits that do not fit into beauty standards account for about 30 percent of the total production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And there are a lot of such sources of food waste.\u00a0Not to mention the fact that we simply cook or buy in stores more than we are able to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span>Major problems of food waste for the world<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>We all know about plastic and these scary pictures, whole islands of this garbage.\u00a0Plastic decomposes for thousands if not millions of years.\u00a0But in the case of organic waste.\u00a0What could be their danger if they are biodegradable?\u00a0The fact is that most of the organic waste ends up in landfills &#8212; the worst possible disposal solution.\u00a0Since air is not allowed into these mountains of garbage, it is unlikely that anyone would have thought of turning over these tons of waste from time to time in order to create compost.\u00a0Which, in turn, did not work out that way, even in theory.\u00a0Thus, food waste is decomposed by means of an anaerobic process, in which methane is released into the atmosphere, which is responsible for the greenhouse effect, global warming, and, accordingly, the melting of glaciers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-744 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Huge-landfill-300x204.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Huge-landfill-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Huge-landfill-600x409.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Huge-landfill.jpg 643w\" alt=\"Huge landfill\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>The company will take measures in the form of installing pipes for transporting gases from landfills.\u00a0But this is still ineffective, including economically.\u00a0Waste storage is a bad decision in itself.\u00a0But it is food waste that does not particularly belong there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the most unpleasant thing is that we are sponsoring this.\u00a0And we pay very good money for this: transportation + storage in landfills + tax for causing harm to the environment, all this comes out in a lump sum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And this is all our money!\u00a0Research by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%92%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%BD%D1%82%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%80%D1%81%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%82\"><span>the University of Vermont<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0suggests that Americans waste half of all their food (over 150kg per person), which is $ 160 billion a year.\u00a0And, according to a UN report, the inhabitants of the planet in 2020, on average, threw 74 kg of food waste per person per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span>Ways to tackle the problem of food waste<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Where there is a problem, there is always a solution.\u00a0And you and I can turn the situation in our direction.\u00a0Each of us is able to contribute to the improvement of the situation in order to preserve the planet for future generations.\u00a0Here is a list of solution paths:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span>Obviously, prevention can be better than curing the disease.\u00a0If everyone starts sorting household waste and using products to the maximum (as we gave the example with the zest and banana peel), then the amount of waste received will be significantly reduced.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In households, ideally everyone should have a small bucket for composting.\u00a0This will not only help fight the world&#8217;s food waste problem, but it will also be an excellent fertilizer for your garden and home plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>Want to know how to compost your food waste?\u00a0Follow\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/kompostirovanie-piszevych-othodov-doma\/\"><span>the link to our article.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Save the food!\u00a0Small business offers some opportunities.\u00a0Here are two examples of interesting applications that will help you save money and at the same time help improve the state of our planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span>1.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/toogoodtogo.pl\/pl\"><span>TooGoodToGo<\/span><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-745 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Main-Page-Too-Good-To-Go-Application-ScreenShot-300x203.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Main-Page-Too-Good-To-Go-Application-ScreenShot-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Main-Page-Too-Good-To-Go-Application-ScreenShot-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Main-Page-Too-Good-To-Go-Application-ScreenShot-600x406.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sashafirs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Main-Page-Too-Good-To-Go-Application-ScreenShot.jpg 960w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/h5>\n<p><span>The international company Too Good To Go has created an application for the AppStore and Android.\u00a0Works in a very simple way.\u00a0Catering establishments are registered in the application and confirm that at the end of the working day they are ready to sell their dishes at cost to anyone who wants to.\u00a0From the conditions &#8212; Vegetable War)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But no matter how we try to reduce food waste, they, one way or another, were and will be.\u00a0And this is not a problem as long as there is a good resource<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Recyclable food waste is beneficial both ecologically and economically.\u00a0So, how can food waste be used (provided that you and I take responsibility for the correct sorting of our household waste).<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h4><span>Composting<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>The most obvious solution for food waste disposal is, of course, composting.\u00a0And if in the case of the anaerobic process, methane is released during the storage of waste, then when oxygen enters on a constant basis, in a few weeks we get high-quality organic compost, which will not only help the quality of the air and the planet as a whole, but also improve the health of plants in our garden.\u00a0Composting can be used locally, which also reduces the start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h4><span>Biogas plant<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>You can go even further and make the most of your food waste.\u00a0And this is what biogas plants serve.\u00a0Such plantations are usually located near farms where there is a constant source of organic waste, be it hay \/ grass cuttings, or any other biodegradable waste.\u00a0<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" into the atmosphere, the gas is collected in special containers, which are subsequently produced:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h6><span>Electricity.<\/span><\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><span>Heat (for greenhouses, ice making, etc.)<\/span><\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><span>Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Food waste is a precious resource.\u00a0The future is behind this resource.\u00a0Which can provide us with heat, electricity, high-quality hummus for gardening and more.\u00a0At the same time, not using this resource correctly, food waste can become nothing more
